The alley depicted in this picture is probably near Westhoven in Zeeland.
Loosjes-Terpstra wrote about the painting 'Herfst' now in the Kröller-Müller Museum, a text which could have been written for this painting."Toorop held on to the principles of Signac.
His return to pure divisionism can be seen in works with subjects from Zeeland, all from 1908.
They have been painted with the same procedure: the canvas has been first covered with a reddish-brown colour, over this layer the whole composition is layed out in squares, brick-like brushstrokes in light, clear colours. The result is strikingly mosaic-like."
